More machines, this time witches on motorbikes from “How to Cook Children”

HARLEY WITCHSCOOTER WITCHESMELIA'S HOUSE

Esmelia Sniff, star of the witches’ recipe book “How to Cook Children”, recently purchased a computer in order to write her own blog (or bog as she puts it). As fate has it she was almost immediately offered a three book deal so she is now too busy to write down her daily twitters. Esmelia and her author friend Martin Howard are now hard at work on the series of novels. She has already completed the first story entitled “Witches at War – The Wickedest Witch”, it’s due out in October 2009. The story follows Sam, Esmelia’s young apprentice as she trains to become a fully fledged witch. It’s both funny and charming and I recommend it 100%!

The final pages in the book are reserved for the small-ads. Esmelia and her fellow witches advertise their own restaurants alongside ads for cooking products such as the wonderful HAG oven…

In “How to Cook Children”, Esmelia Sniff (eight times winner of the World’s Stinkiest Crone award) presents a dazzling collection of recipes from around the world that will have any witch drooling with delight. Whether you’re in the mood for sizzling Bratwurst sausage from Germany – stuffed with real brats – or an exotic Indian Moppet Paneer, “How to Cook Children” is full of great flavours presented by some of the world’s nastiest witches. For those who are lucky enough to have a sweet tooth there are also great dessert ideas. You won’t be able to resist Nanny Todd’s deliciously sticky Apple Betty or Esmelia’s own crunchy Flat Jacks!

ESMELIA-AGAINST CANVAS

When Martin Howard first pitched to me the idea for ‘How to Cook Children’ I was a little nervous about the subject matter, I then read the first chapter and I laughed out loud. I passed it to my son, who was twelve at the time and he quite literally rolled around the floor laughing!

Since publication it has received some rave reviews; the Guardian newspaper reviewed it as their picture book of the week, Dave Myers of the ‘Hairy Bikers’ TV program gave it a wonderful write up and so did the unshockable Gordon Ramsay.

It’s a quirky book that I thoroughly enjoyed working on and the text still makes me laugh whenever I pick it up.

When I first started working on Poison Diaries I produced some light hearted and whimsical drawings, this was partly due to the fact that I’d been working for Disney for so long. Once I’d read the text I soon realized the designs needed to be much darker! The story is set in the grounds of an abandoned monastery, here are some early sketches and also some of the final illustrations that appeared in the book.

Weed’s job is look after the apothecary’s poisonous plants, as he cares for them he begins to hear them speak. Each plant tells him a gruesome story about how they can be used to poison people. For the book I produced a botanical drawing for each of the plants and then a version of the plant in character, through the eyes of Weed.

The wonderfully dark and gothic tale follows the story of a young man called Weed, who is apprenticed to an evil apothecary. When the love of Weed’s life is accidentally poisoned he decides to take revenge on his master…

Here are some early sketches for Weed and the Apothecary and also the final drawings that were included in the book.
